A tres kilómetros del Embalse La Florida, por Ruta Provincial Nº 39, se asciende hasta los 1.400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, donde se extiende una planicie de altura cubierta de sedimentos aptos para el aprovechamiento de campos de pastoreo.
Salpicado de lomas y valles, se extiende la denominada Pampa del Tamboreo, llamada así porque según la tradición de noche se escuchaba el "golpeteo" de los cascos de caballos como si fuera el sonido de tambores.
En la zona, se producen las mayores extracciones de piedra laja (pizarra) de la Provincia de San Luis.
